Being the son of a legend is no easy feat. Fela Kuti wasn’t just the defining voice of Afrobeat’s golden era—his fierce political activism made him a towering figure in Nigeria’s cultural history. Even so, Seun Kuti has carried that weighty torch with conviction, steadily forging his own path and emerging as a legend in his own right.

Led by brothers Nicholas and Peter Furgiuele—who grew up in Boone, NC—the long-running, Atlanta-based indie rock quartet channels a well-honed retro sound that deserves far larger stages. That makes their upcoming show at the intimate Fleetwood’s all the more unmissable.

Tia Cabral is the pop star the world hasn’t yet figured out it needs. For years, the Bay area singer-songwriter has pulled from a unique collection of influences—from 70s R&B to synth pop to shoegaze— and the results have been spellbinding. Her latest, Portrait of a Heart, is no exception. One can only hope she’ll perform her breathtaking album-closing cover of My Bloody Valentine’s “Sometimes” at the Grey Eagle this Saturday. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEqrOuYakGg

On its new album, Jellywish, the Brooklyn-based quartet crafts quiet, contemplative songs that reward close listening. Fortunately, Florist will be in the ideal setting when the band stops through town later this week. Fellow New Yorker, and Double Whammy labelmate, Allegra Krieger will be set a sweet, melancholic mood with an opening set.

Each of his songs carries a deep love and reverence for the past. Like the folk musicians who came long before him, the Durham-based singer/songwriter has a gift for unearthing forgotten treasures and recasting them in a fresh light, while retaining the genuine heart of what first captured his interest.

It's not often you see a jazz group headlining The Orange Peel, but this Canadian trio is anything but ordinary. They've backed Frank Ocean at Coachella, collaborated on an album with Ghostface Killah, and most recently, produced and performed on the latest release from neo-soul singer Baby Rose — who will open the show.

Given how long Jeff Tweedy and company have been making music — and how steadily they’ve released albums and toured — it’s easy to take Wilco for granted. If you’ve ever wanted to see the Chicago band, chances are you’ve had the opportunity. But as one of the finest American bands of my lifetime, they never disappoint. As an added bonus, fans will also get a set from Waxahatchee, who could easily headline a show…

This local trio blends sugary vocal harmonies — courtesy of guitarist Allison Antaramian and drummer Emily Easterly — with sharp, melodic hooks that call to mind the underrated ’90s power pop band That Dog. Honestly, more bands should sound like That Dog.

Some musicians are so good that they can convince an entire population to enjoy a genre that they’ve more or less written off. The country artist from Kentucky, who's recently gone by the moniker Johnny Blue Skies, broke out big in 2014 with Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, and a decade later, he’s as big of a star as it gets.

If you’re anything like me, you hadn’t heard of Van Wissem until the Dutch composer’s otherworldly lute work appeared in Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive. His baroque-inspired compositions are haunting, meditative, and deeply transfixing.

Few frontmen command a stage quite like Samuel T. Herring. Channeling the spirit of synth-pop pioneers like New Order and OMD, Herring and his bandmates craft dance music with emotional weight — tailor-made for those too self-conscious to fully surrender to the rhythm. The band’s 2024 album, People Who Aren’t There Anymore, didn’t receive the critical fanfare of previous releases but was just as good.

Although XTC were one of the most original and influential bands to emerge from England’s post-punk scene in the late 1970s, most fans have never—and likely will never—see them live, due to Andy Partridge’s long-standing aversion to touring. I’m generally not one for cover bands, but EXTC includes XTC’s original drummer, the excellent Terry Chambers, and hearing him play “Making Plans for Nigel” should be something special.
