Earlier this week, Sleeper Sofa released its new single, “Tell Me Stories.” It’s only the second track shared by the new project from Matthew McDaniel—joined by Miles Cramer (drums) and Buffalo Brown (bass)—yet it carries the confidence and craft of a band far deeper into its lifespan. Recorded in August at Drop of Sun with Lawson Alderson (Headringer, i26 Connector), and mastered by Adam McDaniel, “Tell Me Stories” is a warm, hook-laden nod to the classic power-pop of the ’70s that showcases McDaniel’s prowess as a songwriter and producer.
Longtime locals may remember McDaniel from his former project, ASTRALINES. While he’s been quieter in recent years—splitting his time between founding Cooperative Coffee Roasters and raising a family—he’s continued writing and recording at home. “Tell Me Stories,” along with earlier single “The End of Time,” signals a promising new chapter.
In a recent conversation with AVL-Live, McDaniel shared:
“Now we have a big batch of songs and are planning to release them in small doses across a series of EPs as we build this project within the community. Our first EP, waxing moons and setting suns, arrives in January and includes these two songs plus one more we’re excited to share. We’re planning our first show around the release and are already working on the second EP—so it feels good to build momentum slowly and consistently.”
