With more bluegrass than you can shake a banjo at, a bustling experimental scene, a steady churn of garage punk and psych, countless Dead tribute bands, and a red-hot alt-country pipeline, standing out in the Asheville music scene takes bold individualism, and few acts are as audacious as Cam Girl. Unapologetically queer and proudly in-your-face, the hard rock trio brings a fresh, defiant perspective to the sleazy swagger of ‘70s and ‘80s glam and hair metal.
Their newly released sophomore album, Flesh & Chrome, is a shameless, high-octane party—packed with huge riffs, slick production, and enough anthemic energy to light up a drag strip. It’s a throwback to the wild unadulterated fun of The Runaways, Mötley Crüe, and The Darkness. Despite its polish, the album maintains a gritty edge thanks to gloriously raunchy lyrics and some unforgettable lines. Case in point: the bridge of the explosive opener, “Girls…to the Top!” delivers what might be the quote of the year:
“If you’ve ever been intimidated by a woman who’s taller than you, just wait til you meet a woman with a bigger dick.”
Once you’ve blasted your way through Flesh & Chrome, you’ll be happy to hear that Cam Girl will be celebrating the release of the new record with a show at Sly Grog Lounge on Saturday, June 28. It promises to be a wild one.
