Tanner York Welcomes You to the Shower

This past weekend marked a major milestone for young Asheville-based singer-songwriter Tanner York. On Saturday night, he took the stage at the Orange Peel, opening a local showcase with The Silver Doors and Fashion Bath at the city’s premier venue. While likely battling some nerves, York’s charming brand of power pop shone through. Mid-set, he announced that his debut album, Welcome to the Shower, would drop at midnight. The oddly titled LP—preceded by the singles “Girlfriend,” “Cut Out,” and “All Over Again”—offers a warm, lo-fi sound that recalls the likes of Sharp Pins, This Is Lorelei, and Alex G. His slightly distorted vocals carry a youthful buoyancy that pairs perfectly with the record’s irresistibly catchy melodies.

York is quickly emerging as one of Asheville’s most promising young artists. Fortunately, there are a couple chances to catch him live this week: he opens for Hotline TNT on Tuesday, July 22 at Eulogy, and returns to the stage Thursday, July 24 at Static Age alongside Kingship, Badvril, and Sophia Corinne.
